The journey of becoming who I am today has been a complicated endeavor. I am the product of a single parent home, where I grew up on welfare, government commodities, and strict limitations. For most of my life, I was my mother’s nemesis. At the age of thirteen I accepted that God didn’t like me; at fifteen I left home to live on my own; and at sixteen, I was a teenage mother.
Despite my inelegant beginning and the negative predictions from others about my future, I possessed the ability to dream beyond those circumstances—believing that I was worth more and that I could be an asset to the world around me. Through the years, my dreams of having and being more in life and love always eluded me—yet, I remained persistent.
After years of false starts and meager successes, I found myself shaking my fist at God, accusing him of playing favorites when choosing who would be successful—especially as it related to race and social privilege. My passionate protest led me to college where I came across the success fearing personality theory, which offered an explanation for a person’s apprehensiveness or inhibitions towards their own success.
I have spent the last seven years (while pursuing my Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology) researching and studying the bases of this theory, and the astounding correlation it has with the disparities that shackle minorities and women in America. In my seminars and workshops, I refer to myself as “The Success Advocate,” while my work entails changing the achievement ratio in the every-day lives of minorities, I am sure that what I’ve learned will resonate with many—regardless of gender, race, economic status, or educational level.
